The Lemon House: BBC and Lonely Planet Sardinia Walking

Cala Goloritzè Sardinia walking

Lonely Planet Author Kerry Christiani and husband Andy visited The Lemon House in March as they researched Sardinia and took photos for the new edition of the Lonely Planet guide to Sardinia coming out in January 2012. Kerry and Andy both like walking, and Peter spent a lovely afternoon with them, walking down to a deserted Cala Goloritzè after the rain stopped but with the sea very rough after a storm. Kerry has included this walk along with the Gola su Gorroppu from Genna Silana and Tiscali from Sa Barva as her three favourite Sardinian walks on articles just published on the BBC Travel Site and on Lonely Planet’s site. Details of all these walks can be found in the Cicerone walking guide and the Rother walking guide to Sardinia as described on our page Sardinia walking guidebooks.

New Cicerone guide to walking in Sardinia out next week

Cicerone walking Sardinia

The new Cicerone guide to walking in Sardinia comes out next week. Author Paddy Dillon writes, “So what’s Sardinia like? Well… until recently it had the reputation of being stunningly beautiful, abounding in interest, and desperately difficult to explore because so many paths and tracks would simply peter out in dense, thorny macchia, miles from anywhere. It’s all changed in the past year or two, and there are now lots of well-signposted and waymarked trails, so you can stride out confidently knowing that there’s a way through. The routes in the book stretch from the astounding limestone cliffs of Ogliastra, through the barren Supramonte, to the broad whaleback mountains of Gennargentu. This encompasses some of the highest, wildest and most popular walking routes in Sardinia.”

Paddy stayed with us at The Lemon House for two years running when he was writing the guide so we get a good mention. You will be able to buy the guide from us.

Also read about the book on Paddy’s website.

Sardinia mountain bike MTB guide – nearly finished!

sardinia sardegna sardinien mountainbike MTB

Versante Sud is progressing well with the pagination of the mountain bike guide to Sardinia Peter, Amos and Davide have written and every day Peter receives drafts to check and to translate into English – the guide will be published in an English edition as well as an Italian edition.
The guide has detailed maps, profiles, and route descriptions to enable you to follow the routes without a GPS. GPS files will be downloadable as well. It’s very nice to see which photos the publisher has decided to include!
We lend a copy of the draft descriptions to our guests at The Lemon House.

Paddy Dillon walking guide to Sardinia – Italy, Europe

Sardinia walking Paddy Dillon

The Cicerone walking guide to Sardinia, written by Paddy Dillon, will be published in October 2011. More info and order yours now! The 50 routes in this guide cover the highest, wildest and most dramatic areas to be found on Sardinia. Set in an area formerly proposed as a national park, highlights include the rugged Ogliastra limestone coast and Gennargentu granite mountains. Routes use newly-waymarked forest tracks, traditional shepherds’ paths and mule trails through dense macchia shrubland. A mixture of classic trails and new paths combines the popular and little-known. Ranging in difficulty and length (with some stepping away from well-trodden paths), many routes begin in quaint, historic mountain villages. Comprehensive planning information and details of facilities along the way provide everything readers need.

We helped Paddy with accommodation and route descriptions as he was writing his guide in 2009 and 2010 and are very much looking forward to seeing it!

Bonus Sardo vacanza / Sardinia holiday bonus – The Lemon House

The Sardinia Holiday Bonus was proposed by the Regione Sardegna to combat the “caro traghetto”, expensive ferry transport, by reimbursing, for groups of 2-3 people (EU citizens) who travel to Sardinia by ferry from 2 May onwards and then stay in Sardinia for at least 3 nights, €60-90. The Bonus was limited to hotels and campsites. We suggested to the Region that such an approach was unfair towards “extra alberghiere” accommodation such as affittacamere/guesthouses like The Lemon House (www.peteranne.it) which are governed by the Regional law 27/98.

The Tourism cabinet chief of the Regione Sardegna has just phoned us to tell us

  1. People who stay in affittacamere can claim the Holiday Bonus
  2. You can claim if you stayed with us from 2 May (if you no longer have your original receipts, we can send you a copy of our copy and you can try to claim the reimbursement attaching a copy of this email; we can also provide a letter stating the full names of the guests who stayed with us if they are not all listed on the receipt)
  3. the bonus is being extended until 4 September

So keep your boat ticket and your receipt!

70 Sardinia singletrack switchbacks

GoPro HD video of 70 switchbacks 1000 m vertical mountain bike MTB descent of singletrack Sentiero Sorberine (Monte Olinie, Talana, Sardinia) 45′ from The Lemon House. After summer anti-forest-fire maintenance, the switchbacks are a lot easier, but some remain very tight and there are good technical features on lower section of trail. After it rains the rocks will be exposed again. Sorry about typos in subtitles -:(

New Rother walking guide to Sardinia

Rother walking guide Sardinia

The new Rother Walking Guide to Sardinia ISBN 978-3-7633-4800-8 has just been published. What a relief after the 2000 English edition( 50 walks, 14 in our area) had been out of print for years. The new edition has 63 walks in the island, of which 22(!) in our area. Peter gets a special thanks on p264 for his help in suggesting walks in Ogliastra and The Lemon House gets a couple of mentions, both as a place to stay and for information on sports in Sardinia (walking, climbing, mountainbiking, kayaking). On sale at The Lemon House €15.
