Peter Herold and Anne McGlone are a British couple who have been road cycling in Sardinia and Italy since 1992. We first came to Italy on holiday in 1990 and cycle-toured in many areas, mostly in the south or the islands. Then we saw each other at weekend in Rome from 1997 to 2006, Peter working in consulting in Italy and all over Europe and Anne commuting to London to work in IT.
In 2002, we made a tour of the Ogliastra region of Sardinia on our bikes and loved it. We bought a small flat there in 2003, at Porto Frailis near Arbatax, and in 2005 we started to develop the idea of running a centre for climbers, cyclists and walkers, what would become The Lemon House B&B/guesthouse which we opened in 2007. We rent out the apartment we bought in 2003.
As well as cycling touring holidays, for years we’d helped road cycling enthusiasts from the UK take part in Granfondo races in Italy, and we now help cyclists to enjoy the Giro of Sardinia, as well the local road routes in the Ogliastra region of Sardinia where we live. We are keen that other cyclists get the most out of cycling in Sardinia—it’s tremendous fun but you may need to know how to get about a bit in Italian. This is where we help. We both speak Italian and we know how the various ‘procedures’ work. We can help you with race entry, transport, booking hotels for the Giro and so on.
Peter climbed for years as a teenager and when at university, to E4/5 in the Peak District and Wales, and in Scotland, the Alps, Pakistan and Nepal. In 2006 Peter started rock climbing again after a long break. He now climbs up to 7b+ and is very active as well in bolting new routes where we live in Ogliastra. The Lemon House has a bolt fund, and we are bolting lots of new routes and maintaining the existing ones around where we live, as well as developing bouldering and Deep Water Soloing DWS. See the Sardegna Uno TV transmission on the left on climbing in Ogliastra, where we’re interviewed.
We started kayaking in 2007, and Anne now kayaks every other day in the summer, and was even a Regional champion in her age category one year! Below she is with Ada,
her dear friend who often kayaks alongside us. We also spend a lot of time developing and documenting new walks, helping the authors of walking guidebooks to this part of Sardinia.
As well as the road cycling that first brought us here, Peter took up mountain biking in 2008 and now spends a lot of time developing mountain bike MTB routes here.
We both speak Italian well, and as well as English guests at The Lemon House you will meet Italians, often put in touch with us by local friends, neighbours or local restaurants. Our web site and blog are in Italian as well as English. You can read an interview with us by the Unione Sarda Sardinian newspaper.
