Cycling (road and mountain bike), walking and climbing in Ogliastra, Sardinia

We help people do what we love doing—road cycling and mountain biking (MTB) in Ogliastra, and riding the Giro of Sardinia.

Cycling in Sardinia

Ogliastra offers some of the best road cycling in Sardinia and is ideal for training for granfondo / sportive. The roads are well surfaced and very free of traffic apart from the high season in August. Even then, it is not busy. See our photo album.

Note that, contrary to what people think, it’s never really too hot for cycling. In the summer you can get up high early and there are plenty of springs for water. There is also nearly always a good breeze – Sardinia is one of Italy’s windiest regions, rather like many parts of the UK.

We have a small flat which we rent out as well as The Lemon House, our centre for cyclists, walkers and climbers. See here for more details of our accommodation .

We visited this area for 4 years before moving there full-time in 2006 and can show you some great routes round the mountains or in the back roads around the coast. We have good maps and we know the cheapest as well as the best restaurants in the region…

The Giro of Sardinia is a unique event, a 7-day stage race, with an exciting mix of Gran Fondo and both individual and team time trials, where Elite riders and 3rd cat riders can ride together.  In 2011 the event will be held April 23-30 to coincide with Easter and will be based in Arborea, Oristano Every day there is a stage of the race —or cycle touring for those not quite ready to race every day—with full medical and motorcycle backup. We are volunteers with the group who organise the race to help the 80 or so English-speaking cyclists participate in the Giro.

Mountain biking was one of the least-documented activities in Sardinia—there is a good 1991 guide for the whole island, with English introduction and glossary, out of print but you can download here — and from summer 2008 we set about fixing this, at least for our area! By November 2008 we had documented nearly 20 routes, of all levels of difficulty, creating route maps, photos, descriptions, and gps (gpx) and kml files so that we can describe these routes to people staying with us. We now have a range of routes,  from easy rides in the valley and in the rolling forests on the granite hills to rocky, technical singletrack climbs and descents suitable for experts on the limestone Supramonte.  See more details here.
